Q & A - Billeting

What is a Billet Player / Family?

A Billet Player (anywhere between 16 – 20 years old) is someone coming to play for a team that is not located in their own home town.  Players can come from within the US such as California, New York, and Colorado, whereas other players may be coming from another country such as Canada Lithuania, Ukraine, and Sweden.

Billet Families are those who welcome these promising young players from far and wide into their homes and treat them like family.  Without these families, the players have no one to watch over them, guide them, love them, and provide consistency and continuity of care for them.

What are my Responsibilities as a Billet Family?

Provide a safe and warm home environment including a bedroom to themselves and access to a bathroom

Provide an adequate level of adult supervision to ensure the player is following all team policies and rules

Provide food, and include them in meal times, access to laundry, and space to dry & store their gear (if needed)

Establish a set of guidelines for the players so they know what is expected (responsibilities, rules, curfew, etc.)

Understand a player’s practice and game schedule and support them when needed

Take an interest in their games, attend when you can, or just be there to listen if they’re feeling stressed about playing time, team issues, or being homesick

Respect a player’s privacy and need for independence but create an open line of communication with not only the player but their parent’s as well

Make your player feel comfortable, not only in your home but in the community as well, treat them as you would want your own children to be treated

What are the Responsibilities of the Billet Player?

To be knowledgeable of what is expected and acceptable in their billet’s home

Be respectful of their new home / family

Be willing to participate in family activities

If taking classes, maintain a 3.0 GPA or better

Keep an open line of communication, such as provide the host family with your practice and game schedule

Adhere to the rules and regulations set by the team as well as any additional household rules

Benefits of Billeting a Player with the Potomac Patriots …

First and foremost, hockey billets often form lasting relationships with their players, and in some cases their billet players families as well.  However, this year we have some special benefits in store for Billet Families such as: free admission to home games and Free Stick-n-Shoots for your young player when they attend with the Juniors Player just to name a few.
